Once upon a time, Land Rover had never heard of the big city, only mud, rivers and rocky terrain. Built for function, durability and to access the inaccessible, the Defender was designed to be hosed down from the inside out. Until relatively recently, comfort was a design box left unticked. Enter the tallest and widest Defender, OCTA Black, representing the most striking, premium and muscular expression of the lineup to date. A formidably capable machine, this limited edition is wrapped in an intense all-black design theme that underscores both ruggedness and luxury. Described as the truest black in the Defender palette, Navrik Black with its deep, glossy finish, cloaks the body, setting the tone for a stealthy yet commanding presence on and off road. Over 30 exterior components have received the same treatment, finished in gloss or satin black, from the grille to the quad exhaust tips. Even underbody elements sport black finishes, showcasing Land Rover’s attention to detail and cohesive aesthetic.

The black theme flows to the wheels and trim: buyers can choose between 20-inch forged wheels or 22-inch gloss black wheels with black centre caps and bespoke Defender script, while gloss black brake calipers add to the aggressive look. Satin black powder-coated undershields and scuff plates further reinforce the visual theme, blending form with a tough, utilitarian edge. Inside, Defender OCTA Black elevates luxury as assertively as it does style. For the first time in a Defender, Ebony Semi-Aniline Leather with Kvadrat™ upholstery is offered, pairing a soft, tactile finish with unique perforations and detailed stitching. The cabin’s cross-car beam is surfaced in Satin Black Powder Coat while an optional chopped carbon fibre interior brings an added layer of premium texture. Contrasting Carpathian Grey accents on seat backs and armrest hinges give a subtle visual depth that reinforces the feeling you’re in something pretty special.

Under the hood, the OCTA Black retains the formidable performance DNA of the standard Defender OCTA. Propelled by a throat-clearing, 4.4-litre twin-turbo mild-hybrid V8 engine that delivers around 635 PS (626-hp), mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, the noise is glorious and the acceleration, rapid. An advanced 6D Dynamics suspension system keeps the SUV poised whether crawling over rocks or cruising on a highway, and a dedicated OCTA Mode button enhances off-road performance when conditions demand it. The cabin also incorporates Defender’s latest tech: a large 13.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, incorporating a plethora of apps, along with the superb Meridian surround sound with optional Body and Soul Seats which let occupants feel the music, immersively.
Land Rover build cars that are eminently capable, everywhere. In Defender they have a brand that draws on a vast history of endurance and emotion. And in OCTA Black, that’s wrapped in stealth couture and reassuringly limited.
