A SPECTACULAR FLAGSHIP FOR A NEW GENERATION OF ULTRA PREMIUM SPORTS COUPES, THE DB11 IS THE MOST POWERFUL AND THE MOST EFFICIENT DB SERIES IN THE HISTORY OF ASTON MARTIN. A TRUE MASTER IN THE ART OF RENEWAL AFTER MORE THAN 100 YEARS IN BUSINESS…
THE NEW STANDARDS OF A GT
Built around an all-new twin-turbo V12 engine, with phenomenal performance, this newcomer also boasts major reductions in terms of fuel consumption and emissions. The highly advanced and cutting edge aerodynamics ensures exceptional stability while maintaining a streamlined look: a key value of the English automaker. The structure of the body is also new and combines a robust feel with greater interior volume. Indeed, everything is new in the DB11 from the frame, engine, ZF gearbox, interior equipment and design down to the onboard electronics. The engine compartment can be opened electrically providing access to a true treasure trove. The hood can be opened and closed with electrical assistance and this is where the hard work of the Gaydon-based engineers can truly be felt. Under the hood, the DB 11 is simply superb with a small plaque attached to the engine block, signed by the person who built the engine attesting to the “manufactured” aspect of this harmonious assembly as a work of art…
A FABULOUS V12
The turbopower associated with this “totally hand-made” 5.2-liter twin-turbo engine with 608 hp and 700 Nm of torque is entirely new. Aston had previously used turbochargers (Vantage in the 90s) but here the maximum torque is available from 1500 tr/mn and the rest at 100% up to 6000 tr/mn. The stunning lines of this British diva, with its new grille, offer a glimpse of the Aeroblade: an aerodynamic system (aero-spoiler) patented by Aston. It results in a retractable virtual spoiler configuration: wings on the hood guide the air flow and increase the aerodynamic support (thereby reducing the positive bearing capacity) without requiring a spoiler. The balance between harmony and stability, shape and utility is ever present. A unique, elegant and special system: so British. As for the rest, the body delightfully blends aluminum and composite materials, only the most beautiful. The cabin showcases the first signs of the fruitful partnership with Mercedes AMG, especially the 12-inch screen used to display all the necessary information in real time.
The screen is accessed via a joystick placed at the center of the console, which is both easy and intuitive. AMG thus becomes the favored engine-maker of Aston Martin, at least in terms of future V8s. As for the rest, the cabin is more spacious, however the rear seats, like with many GT coupes, are reserved for children or luggage. Barely longer than the DB9, this DB11 stands apart especially through a slightly wider wheelbase. A new keyless ignition system casts aside the sublime crystal key that was inserted in the dashboard of previous Aston models. Furthermore, the seating layout is rather remarkable, similar to the very high-end range of exceptional GTs.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
Three driving modes (GT, Sport or Sport +) can be selected using a button located on the central console and that work a little like a “Magnettino”. The latter can felt with the response of the accelerator, exhaust and gear management. Another switch is used to manage suspension based on three modes (comfort, sport or sport+), this helpful separation between these two functions is rarely offered by competitors. The result: a “bespoke” car tailored to the mood and whims of those in it. The automatic 8-speed gearbox is a smooth model for driving comfort that easily and effortlessly makes shifting between gears imperceptible. The wheel paddles can be used to “take back control” therefore in sequential mode, based on what the driver wants. Superbly comfortable thanks to its adaptive damping, the DB11 is above all an incredibly powerful GT, not to mention versatile that can be used on a daily basis. Effective curve handling thanks to its active torque vectoring limited-slip differential, this beauty knows how to be agile in both comfort and sport mode. A powerful linear engine that places the performance of this DB11 among the top GTs, with well-calibrated braking up to the standards.
OUR OPINION
Aston has been able to change everything without renouncing the fundamentals of its roots and traditions, especially the “hand-made” aspect. The Aston Martin soul and authenticity are ever present, associated with a flawless design, remarkable fluidity, top performance and a black-tie look: all the while remaining discrete and elegant. Easily seducing “Gentlemen Drivers” and likely many more!
