“Mégève’s good fairy” The story of Mont d’Arbois is closely tied to the vision of Noémie de Rothschild, who transformed a barren plateau into one of France’s first luxury ski resorts. Offended to be surrounded by German natives sojourning in the Swiss resort during the First World War, the wife of Maurice de Rothschild aimed to recreate the Saint-Moritz experience in France.
In 1920, she discovered the Mont d’Arbois plateau, high above Megève. Thrilled with the sight of this unspoiled landscape, bathed in soft light and surrounded by alpine peaks, she immediately envisioned a place unlike any other in France: an elegant mountain resort capable of embracing a new way of life in winter. From this vision emerged one of the founding projects in the history of Megève and Mont d’Arbois. In 1921, the Palace des Neiges was inaugurated as the resort’s first hotel, paving the way for the creation of an internationally renowned Alpine resort. Under the leadership of Noémie de Rothschild, Megève gradually transformed into an iconic destination for French Alpine luxury, combining nature, elegance, and hospitality.
Over the generations, the history of Mont d’Arbois has been passed down through a family legacy deeply rooted in Megève. In the 1950s, Edmond de Rothschild, son of Noémie de Rothschild, continued to develop the estate and enhanced the resort’s reputation, notably through the renovation of the Palace des Neiges and the expansion of the Chalet du Mont d’Arbois.
